WTF

Ok, so I just finished watching Donnie Darko, the directors cut, and I didn't really get it. It was ironic and weird, but what was it all about? I sort of got the whole they think I'm crazy but I'm really not vibe, but I'm really confused. Why was it all a dream? How did it come to be a dream? Is it meant to be a play on what if's?

I get the ironicity of how if Donnie hadn't had weird dreams he would have gotten killed, but in the end it was weird because they were all dreaming or something.

I can't really process what it was, what was the movie about?
