I wanted to add to the question of Dean getting John to talk about Sam... I think for the first couple weeks or so, it was a totally touchy, don'-go-there subject, but since John went to see Sam at Stanford to make sure he was safe, and since John apparently bragged about Sam to random clients, i don't think they had a hard tome talking about him.

And i think Dean talked to Sam while he was in school for the first couple of years, but then, to make the pilot 'fit', i think there was an argument or something and that Sam told Dean to fuck off and leave him alone and Dean finally did.

As for stuff Sam might have needed to learn...man. I think he *did* need to, but i'm blanking right now.
:)
Interesting questions. I think Sam told Dean he was leaving, and that Dean was hurt - feeling like part of his family was leaving. He saw it as a form of betrayal. I don't think he lost his hunter 'instincts', but I think he acclimated within a year or so. He's intelligent, and they very easily slip into different lives to deal with people, as in playing different roles. From what little we saw of his college life: he had a fair number of friends, suggesting that he embraced at least that side of life, if not the partying side. As an added incentive; he thought he'd left behind his whole family, and life, so he would have adapted fairly quickly.

I suspect that between John and Dean, the topic was touchy at first, but they did go and check up on him and John did apparently brag about Sam to others. I think at some point the brothers found that trying to deal with their separate lives and each other just got too painful, and one or the other, or both, just stopped talking. In my mind; most likely Sam, not wanting to hear Dean keep telling him to come back to his family.

As for the sort of things he had to learn: Sam likely had way more life experience than most of his classmates, so I suspect the hardest thing he had to learn, was not to give that away. He's shown himself to be intelligent, sensitive to other people and able to adapt quickly, so I suspect he was way ahead of a lot of them - plus he was seriously dedicated and had a goal strongly in mind.
